And I need to vent some frustration. So I got new locks for my truck shell. Okay great, but from there on its just problem after problem. I go to install them, realize the screws are rusted to the locks, and I strip them. I Proceed to drill them out, But My 6 year old, seldom used Drill dies after the first screw on the drivers side, this was yesterday. So I charge my drill over night, And Drill both screws on that lock out. Then I realize The new locks arent threaded and the old ones were. So I cant fasten the latches using the old hardware. So I drive to the hardware store and pick up some hardware that will work. I install it with no Issues. Great, Now half my bed locks. Except I realize my shell was broken into at some point in its 21 year life and the latch bracket is bent, so I hammer it back. Then I go to Drill out the second lock, My drill dies again in the middle of drilling out the last screw. And I was so close, look at this hole:

Kinja'd!!!

So tonight I ordered a new battery from home depot, Shipped to store. Should be here on the 16th. But For tonight I have a charging drill that doesnt hold a charge and a half locking Truck bed with the non locking latch nearly sheared off. And I have work at 9am tomorrow. So Im gonna wake up early, Drill that fucker out and Finally have a securable cargo area in my truck then go to work. Then right after work Im helping a friend move for $25. But before I can go do that I have to clear my bed of all the tools, fluids and sandbags. So that'll be interesting.

HAHAHA man that's one heck of a day and a half. Well you're about done so all is just fine. Get some rest so you can get on up early enough for your long day tomorrow.

For a 20+ year old truck, little things like this are just maintenance. If something little doesn't go wrong, it probably has already fallen off. Things like this are part of oldish car ownership. For instance, one of the previous owners of my 4Runner, torqued down the rear diff fill bolt(or whatever its called). That is supposed to be hand tight. They also torqued down the fuel filter. Age + Previous owners = Minor annoyance. The freedom of owning it and enjoying everything about it is when the annoyances make it worth while. Just like humans, they aren't perfect. Just learn to love it's imperfections.

Another thing that was/is wrong with my truck, Well this one is kinda my fault. You know that Brake fluid cap I used as a Clutch fluid cap? Well It had no relief hole. So my clutch became ultra pressurized and leaked out of the top of the hose at the bottom of my resivoir. So this morning I Drilled a hole in the cap. It seems to have fixed it. My clutch still leaks from where it was, but the fluid level is stagnant. I think there was fluid in the hose that was ultra pressurized and its leaking out. Its slowly stopping, Every time I wipe it down there is less and less fluid to wipe up. Im just lucky I didnt blow the hose or worse, The master cylinder.

What drill do you have?

18vDeWalt has done pretty good for about 5-6 years. I now have Bosch tools, pretty good this last year.

Also check out the screw extractor at Home Depot, $20 but it has saved me a few times. I know you'll have this project done tomorrow, but next time you strip a screw, this might help.

The more labor you put into that truck, the more you make it your own. Labor of love. Keep on truckin'

I have a Ryobi 9.6v. The battery is Nickel Cadmium, Thats why its not holding a charge. I actually Have a screw extractor, I didnt like it for this job because I have no struts for my shell, and I dont plan on buying any. My Pine 2x4 works just fine

Changed my auto trans fluid in my XJ a long time ago & like a noob, put the drain plug back with an impact. Stripped it so fast. Then realized what happened. Awww FFFFFFUUUUUDDDDDGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE......

Had to get a drain plug replacement from a race shop. Still holding today.

So friggin' frustrating when you're on top of a job but your tools / parts aren't what you need.

I know that feel.

What really sucks Is Im so close to getting through to the screw. If I had a tap, I could have that thing out in 10 seconds

You can't extract something that has become One With The Universe through corrosion. Cobalt bits all the way.

Well, the correct part was discontinued in 2012 and my original one is wavier than a ruffles chip. So I really have no choice

I had to drill out three screws just to change a headlight bulb in the Lada. Such is life. Replace them with something other than Phillips head. Phillips suck donkey balls. Slots are also crap. Allens turn into impossible-to-remove circles. I'd recommend Robertson (gotta love that square!), but you likely don't have any available to you or a screwdriver to turn them. You likely can't get Torx screws, but that's my next favourite after Robinson. Hex heads are also an option.

Call me weird, but I have a 9.6v and 18v cordless, plus a corded 3/8" Makita and 1/2" Makita hammerdrill just in case.

Backups are important, even when you go for years without needing them. (Don't tell your partner I said this.)

No parts yards with them? Checked all of the local parts stores to see if they have some left?

Yeah, didn't think that even if you got screws extracted you wouldn't be able to utilize with new locks.

Carry on. Also expensive as they are, new shocks are nice. I replaced the ones on metro hatch. Glad I did.

The amount of times the camper glass on my dads old truck smacked someone in the head was unreal. That thing was trashed (camper shell glass & frame)

Jealous of a truck. I'd love to have one for work duties.

I looked, Nope. And even if a scrap yard had one, I wouldnt trust it to be straight, These things very commonly warped. The closest place that had one was a ford dealer in kansas, They wanted to charge me $94 + freight. So much nope to that idea

The cheap pot metal that makes up the camper latches probably aren't with the time effort. New hardware all the way.

Agreed - drill baby drill.

I was just making a cautionary note to those that thought extractors could save them - because they can't if what you're extracting will never ever be removed again.

Also, The screws are on the inside. I'm drilling through them from the outside because its easier to get leverage and Im just tossing the old latches, The locks are seized anyway

Well, if the screws are on the inside, they should keep a bit better. Phillips in my experience just strips out so friggen easily, though.

Generally youre right about phillips, but Mounting screws have reinforced heads like this:

Oh yeah, that's cool. You can always throw a socket on it if you strip it out. I don't know if I'd call it reinforced though.
